The Eagle Varsity Football team is getting ready for their 2021-2022 season. With scrimmage wins coming against Liberty and Appomattox, the Eagles are currently 0-2 in the regular season after an opening night loss to Bassett and a 26-56 loss to Liberty Christian Academy (LCA).

Both Liberty & Appomattox were skilled offensively and defensively, but at the end of the day, the Eagles’ speed to the ball on defense and their ability to stay true to their “run first” mentality and pound the ball physically on offense made all the difference in both wins.

The Eagles' one scrimmage loss came at the hands of E.C. Glass (21-14) on September 3rd. This game was another hard fought battle on both ends, but the big difference in winning and losing was two turnovers made by the Eagles' offense.

The Eagles’ regular season and home opener against Bassett also ended in a 42-25 loss on August 27th. Numerous injuries and COVID quarantines for the Eagles did them no favors, as they struggled to settle into the game.

These same problems continue to dog the team; the offense is currently down a few key starters and reserves, as is the defense.

COVID in particular is challenging this season with quarantines, postponements, and cancellations. The Eagles’ week two game at Salem was cancelled due to COVID concerns.

Players are not happy about these setbacks.

“They should’ve let us play,” senior offensive tackle #65 Jeremiah Lee commented.

Still, there seems to be tons of optimism within the locker room expressing that the Eagles think they will have a great season. This is all because of the hard work and time each player and coach feel they have put in over the summer to prep for the upcoming season.

“We have a brotherhood. When one of our guys falls down, we help them up," senior wide receiver/defensive back #21 Jonas Stockton finished.

The remainder of the Eagles’ regular season games are as follows:

9/17 @ Magna Vista

9/24 V Hidden Valley

10/8 @ Staunton River

10/15 V William Byrd

10/22 @ William Fleming

10/29 V Lord Botetourt

11/5 V Northside
