The Struggle of the Job Hunt--Tips To Help You Succeed

By Peter Stefo--Eagle staff writer

Many high school students reach the point where they decide it's time to get a job and gain some work experience. However, many often have had a hard time getting an interview - let alone hired, which is puzzling considering the large number of Help Wanted signs around the county. What's going on?

There could be many reasons for the difficulty in getting a callback. One mistake that many people make and don't think about is filling out job applications on a a cell phone. "Because most job applications are online, employers set AI software to delete job applications with spelling errors, people who can't work certain days, or skipped questions,” says Timothy Aylor, an employee of the Virginia Employment Commission Office of Economic Information & Analytics.

This is why it is so important to fill out online applications on a computer if you can. “If applying online, do it on a computer! Answer all questions, proofread for spelling and grammar errors,” Aylor explains.

Something else that is important for getting a job is having soft skills. ”Effective communication, professional attire, eye contact, a firm handshake, respectful speech, punctuality, and thorough preparation for interviews can all leave a lasting impression on potential employer,” says Karli Foster, Business Retention & Expansion and Workforce Manager for Franklin County.

Another important tool for finding a job is having a good resume. “A strong resume is also essential. Reach out to school counselors for help tailoring your resume and application to highlight your experiences and relevant skills,” Foster explains.

Communication is also a very important skill for when you go in and meet employers in person. “Always speak clearly and use 'yes sir/yes ma'am, please, thank you' and look who you are speaking to in the eyes,” says Aylor.

One necessity that many people lack is a voicemail.”Employers receiving an outgoing message of “User has not set up a voice mailbox” or “Mailbox is full” will go on to the next applicant,” Aylor says.

They say the early bird gets the worm and that is true for getting a job as well. ”If you are called in for an interview, BE EARLY,” Aylor emphasizes.

It's also important to make sure you're off your phone in the interview because that sends employers the wrong message. According to Aylor, "The biggest reasons employers are scared to hire young people are showing up late, not showing up, and staring at their phone at work."

Out of everything the most important thing you can do is keep trying. “While there’s no guarantee of securing a job, each application and interview is a valuable learning opportunity,” Foster says.

In the end, it's persistence that matters most. “Remember, every interaction is an opportunity to showcase your abilities, and your reputation is one of your strongest assets when applying for jobs,” Foster says.
